When writing out an in-text citation, be sure to follow the instructions for the specific style manual (e.g. MLA, APA, CSE).  Here are some basic instructions for three popular style manuals.  Consult the PC Library Citations Guide or Purdue OWL for more examples and detailed instructions.

MLA Basic Format
 

(Author's Last Name page #).


Examples:

(Miller 241).
(Miller and Roe 35-38).
(Merrion et al. 85). Use et al. for more than 2 authors.

APA Basic Format

(Author's Last Name, publication year).

Examples:

(Miller, 2018).
(Miller & Roe, 2016).
(Merrion et al., 2019). Use et al. for more than 2 authors.

CSE Basic Format

(Author's Last Name publication year).

Examples:

(Miller 2018).
(Miller and Roe 2016).
(Merrior et al. 2019) Use et al. for more than 2 authors.
