Controversial topics are usually issues that have differing viewpoints and are being discussed today.  These topics are often used for writing an argumentative paper.  Finding a controversial topic that you're interested in can be one of the most challenging steps to writing the paper.

  1. Browse topics in the PC Library Argument / Debate subject databases to get some ideas.  CQ Researcher, Issues & Controversies, and Opposing Viewpoints (Gale in Context) are some of our top issues databases.

  2. Browse ProCon.org, a current events website with pros and cons of controversial issues.

  3. Search for controversial issues in public policy websites.  These websites are often nonpartisan but may or may not have a particular viewpoint on the issue.  Some examples include:
    American Enterprise Institute: Policy Areas
    Brookings Institute: Topics
    Cato Institute
The Heritage Foundation (select Explore Issues)
    Pew Research Center: Topics
    RAND Reports by Topic
    Urban Institute (select Topics)
